What Battery Chemistry Does Powerwall 3 Use?

Short answer

Powerwall 3 uses lithium-ion battery cells. Tesla's current public technical datasheet and consumer specifications do not identify the specific cathode chemistry as lithium iron phosphate (LFP), nickel manganese cobalt (NMC), or another formulation, so a more specific claim should be treated as unconfirmed unless Tesla documents it for the exact model and market.

What Tesla confirms publicly

Tesla's Powerwall 3 Heat Mode white paper refers to lithium-ion cell operating parameters and describes dedicated cell-level heating. Tesla also lists Powerwall 3 to battery and energy-storage safety standards including UL 1973, UL 9540, and unit-level UL 9540A performance criteria.

The public datasheet gives capacity, voltage ranges, power, temperature limits, dimensions, and certifications. It does not contain an LFP, lithium iron phosphate, NMC, or nickel manganese cobalt designation.

Why chemistry guesses spread

Cell suppliers and product configurations can change by region or production period. Vehicle battery reporting is also frequently copied into home-storage discussions even though the products have different enclosures, controls, and certification records.

A teardown, installer comment, or unsourced comparison may describe a particular unit accurately and still fail to establish the chemistry of every Powerwall 3 sold. The model and part number need to match before that evidence carries much weight.

Use published system data for purchase decisions

Chemistry can matter for thermal behavior and cycle life, but the warranted system performance and approved installation are the enforceable parts of a homeowner's purchase. Keep an installer statement if it goes beyond Tesla's public documents.
