One board foot is a 12-inch square sprayed one inch thick. The arithmetic stays simple until slopes, rim joists, and small cavities enter the measurement. Break those areas into rectangles, add them, and measure the surface being sprayed rather than the floor below it.

Open-cell and closed-cell serve different assemblies
Open-cell foam expands more and uses less material for a given cavity volume, though it needs greater thickness for the same R-value. Closed-cell foam is denser and reaches a higher R-value per inch. Its vapor behavior and structural properties differ too.
The choice belongs to the entire enclosure design. Roof drying direction, exterior sheathing, climate, indoor humidity, existing vapor-control layers, and whether the attic contains combustion equipment all matter.
A quote should name more than a thickness
- Product and approval. The exact foam system, target lift thickness, final depth, and evaluation report.
- Substrate preparation, temperature range, moisture condition, masking, overspray control, and cleanup.
- Occupant protection. Isolation, ventilation, PPE, re-entry time, and what happens if odor or visible defects remain.
- The thermal or ignition barrier, plus any ventilation or combustion changes caused by moving the thermal boundary.
Questions people ask before buying
How do I calculate board feet for spray foam?
Multiply square feet by thickness in inches. Five hundred square feet sprayed three inches thick equals 1,500 theoretical board feet. Add a yield allowance before dividing by the rated kit yield, then round whole kits up.
How much spray foam do I need for 1,000 square feet?
At one inch thick, 1,000 square feet needs 1,000 theoretical board feet. At three inches it needs 3,000. A 10 percent field-yield allowance raises that purchase target to 3,300 board feet, or six kits when each kit is rated for 600 board feet.
What is the R-value per inch of spray foam?
The planning defaults here are R-3.6 per inch for open-cell and R-6.5 per inch for closed-cell foam. Published products vary. Use the aged R-value or tested value in the product data and confirm any code-required thickness, especially where space is tight.
Why is actual kit yield lower than the rated yield?
Rated yield is measured under controlled conditions. Cold tanks, the wrong substrate temperature, uneven lift thickness, hose losses, overspray, and application technique can reduce field yield. The calculator lets you add an allowance rather than assuming every rated board foot reaches the assembly.
Can I install spray foam myself?
Small two-component kits still require the product's respiratory, skin, eye, ventilation, isolation, and re-entry controls. Rooflines and large cavities also need building-science and fire-code decisions. Read the safety data sheet and installation instructions before deciding whether the scope is appropriate for DIY work.
Does spray foam need an ignition or thermal barrier?
Often, but the required protection depends on the location, access, product approval, tested assembly, and local code. A coating is not automatically interchangeable with gypsum board. The written scope should name the tested product, thickness, and required protective layer.
